In an age in which connectivity and data reign supreme, the Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a transformative force, weaving an intricate web of smart devices into the fabric of our daily lives.

From smart thermostats and wearable fitness trackers to self-driving cars and industrial sensors, IoT technology has already made its presence felt in various sectors. But its influence extends far beyond convenience and efficiency.

The security industry is embracing IoT with fervor, opening the door to novel solutions that promise to reshape the way we protect what matters most.

For Securitas, IoT is a dynamic instrument for turning vast data sets into actionable insights. This data-driven approach offers a strategic avenue to help ensure safety. By analyzing digital intel and acting upon it with timely physical measures, the promise of heightened security becomes more tangible.

Securitas Spain’s approach to wildfire outbreaks

A testament to the power and potential of security IoT is evident in a pilot project rolled out by Securitas Spain earlier in 2023. The initiative uses security IoT devices as part of an innovative approach to wildfire prevention and prediction.

Utilizing a combination of solar-powered sensors and artificial intelligence (AI), these devices can identify forest fires in their initial stages, allowing for swift intervention.

Rapid response is crucial in helping to prevent fires from escalating, addressing a pressing environmental concern that claims an estimated 339,000 lives globally each year and poses a significant challenge to several Sustainable Development Goals.

Securitas Spain's IoT division installs and maintains these IoT devices, with monitoring conducted from the Securitas Operation Center (SOC). By harnessing insights from the data, Securitas can analyze patterns, detect fire risks, and help predict them in areas where sensors are strategically placed. This allows for a quicker response to fire outbreaks by alerting fire brigades or notifying emergency centers.

IoT sensors' versatile deployment

With AI and deep learning capabilities, the sensors can adapt to virtually any environment where they’ve been installed. This versatility allows the technology to be easily exported to a variety of settings across several regions, and potentially, different countries.

The initiative is paving the way for Securitas Spain to introduce this innovative solution to private and public clients, expanding the reach of this unique offering.

"Securitas is continuously forging a seamless connection between the digital and the physical," says Martin Althén, president of Securitas Digital. "Our dynamic approach allows us to have a presence in locations where traditional manpower might be challenging. The initiative in Spain is a testament to our ongoing digital transformation journey.”

IoT and beyond: Securitas' blueprint for a safer tomorrow

As the use cases for IoT security solutions evolve and expand, it’s clear that they’re an invaluable technology in shaping the future of security.

The rapid adoption of intelligent security underscores a shifting landscape and a growing need to integrate advanced technologies. Our ambition is not just to keep pace, but to lead the way.

The deployment of this IoT solution is one example of our commitment to safety, security, and sustainability. As we confront the increasing risk of wildfires, these technological advancements stand as an essential tool in the global battle against environmental crises and other critical challenges.

In this increasingly interconnected world, the unique combination of data intelligence and physical presence enables us to enhance global security and well-being.
